Marcel Duchamp was, with Picasso, one of the really central figures in the art of this century, for while Picasso altered the course of the history of art, it was Duchamp who caused art to advance conceptually. Marcel Duchamp was a revolutionary artist, not because he attempted to impose a new language on art but on account of the new attitude of the spirit that he proposed.

Description
The Duchamp’s exhibition that this catalogue gathers, curated by Gloria Moure in 1984, was of an unequivocally anthological nature and had been planned with the intention of encompassing the whole of Marcel Duchamp’s contribution to art. It was not, of course, a complete assembly of the artista known work, for that would be an imposible objective, but it does contain some unpublished material of extraordinary importance, of particular interest being the photographic documentation on Étant donné. The exhibition by Gloria Moure is trully interesting because the grouping of the works according to subject-matter would facilitate a deeper reading of the various aspects of Duchamp’s oevre. However, this approach could not admit the exclusion of any of the principal works. This catalogue, naturally, follows the structure of the exhibition, both in the texts dealing with the exhibits and in the brief introductions to each section.
